The long-term resident visa (定住者) is primarily for descendants of Japanese nationals (Nikkei) and certain other groups. It allows unrestricted work.

Requirements

  • Being a third-generation (or closer) descendant of a Japanese national
  • Spouses of long-term residents may also be eligible
  • Refugees recognized by Japan
  • Certain other humanitarian cases

Documentation of family lineage is typically required.

  1. Gather family lineage documents (birth certificates, family register translations)
  2. Apply for COE at immigration (or apply for a change of status if already in Japan)
  3. Apply for visa at Japanese embassy
  4. Enter Japan and receive residence card
